Golden Gate Bridge
The Golden Gate Bridge is located in the west coast city of San Francisco. The Golden Gate Bridge links the city to Marin County right across the bay.
The federal govenrment authorized the project in 1930 and issued a bond of $35 million to finance the construction of the bridge. The chief engineer for the project was Joseph B. Strauss and the person who was responsible for the design was Strauss's assistant, Irving Morrow.
The bridge spans across 1.7 miles long with the towers as high as a 48-story building. The construction of the bridge was completed in 1937 and it is still one of the world's largest suspension bridges. You can cross the bridge by car, on foot or by bicycle.
In 1987, was the bridge's 50th anniversary of its completion. The bridge was closed to traffic and 200,000 people filed onto the bridge thus causing the central span to drop by 10 feet.
